A thriving Karratha business with a commitment to supporting the local community has been named a finalist in the 2015 Telstra Western Australian Business Awards.

KBSS Engineering is one of six finalists chosen in the ‘New Start Up’ category, which is open to businesses that have been operating for 1-3 years, with up to 200 employees.

The local enterprise supplies specialised support services to the mining, oil, gas and marine sectors, including engineering, fabrication, machining, mechanical and electrical solutions.

24 WA businesses have been recognised across the Award’s five categories, and aside from a Regional finalist based in Kununurra, KBSS Engineering is the only finalist located north of Geraldton.

The General Manager of KBSS Engineering, Cory Byers, is very proud of KBSS’ selection as a finalist.

‘This achievement gives us confidence that we’re doing the right thing and moving in the right direction,’ Mr Byers said.

‘Entering the Awards took a lot of time and effort, but the encouragement we’ve received has been well worth it.’

KBSS Engineering began operating in September 2012, with six employees and a two-week job on Cape Lambert. The client was impressed by the local cost savings and the high quality of work, and almost three years later, the business has grown to a workforce of more than 100 people.

Mr Byers attributes much of KBSS Engineering’s success to its commitment to investing in the people and the community of Karratha.

‘It’s a priority for us to support our local community and make a positive contribution. We predominantly use local businesses and suppliers, and we are committed to training and employing local Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

‘This creates an environment where our employees feel part of a team.’

With a Mission of ‘Working Together, Winning Together,’ KBSS Engineering strives to develop relationships and deliver outcomes where everyone wins. The close working relationship with the Ngarliyarndu Bindirri Aboriginal Corporation (BRIDA) of Roebourne is an example of this, providing local Aboriginal people with employment opportunities and training.

Winning is not new to KBSS Engineering. In 2014, they won the Best New Business at the 2014 Karratha Chamber of Commerce and Industry Awards and also received a High Commendation in the Industry Development and Innovation Award. Mr Byers won the 2014 Karratha Young Professionals Award for Construction and Resources.

The announcement of the 2015 Telstra WA Business Awards will be made at Crown Perth on Tuesday 7 July, and the winners will head to the national awards in Sydney on Thursday 20 August.
